Chapter 159 Pathfinder Crisis
Chapter 159 Pathfinder Crisis
Lei Tao looked at the busy figures of the Military Control Commission's special operations team and turned to the captain and said, "Captain, we have to plan our evacuation route in advance. We can't take the usual route. We have to choose some hidden and difficult-to-track trails. I'll go ahead and scout the way. Once you've set up the booby traps, follow as soon as possible."
The captain nodded and said, "Okay, Brother Lei Tao, be careful. We'll be there soon."
Lei Tao took a deep breath, gripped the weapon tightly in his hand, and walked towards the depths of the woods. His figure soon disappeared into the dense woods.
Lei Tao moved cautiously through the woods, pausing periodically to listen. His ears, like sensitive radars, picked up any unusual sounds. His eyes scanned his surroundings in the darkness, trying to discern direction and potential dangers. He controlled his footsteps gently on the fallen branches and leaves, trying not to make any loud noises that would give away his position.
After walking for a distance, he found a narrow and sparsely traveled valley path ahead. He thought this might be an ideal evacuation route. So, he crouched down and slowly approached the path, ready to take a closer look.
Just as he approached the trail entrance, he suddenly heard a faint hissing sound. Lei Tao was startled, but with his vast experience, he immediately recognized the sound as that of a snake. He paused, his entire body tense, afraid to move, his eyes anxiously searching the darkness for the source of the sound. A moment later, he spotted a colorful venomous snake coiled on a rock beside the trail, its tongue barking, glaring coldly at him. The snake's triangular head was held high, its cold eyes gleaming with ferocity and vigilance, its body slightly arched, ready to strike a fatal blow.
Suddenly, the venomous snake's head jerked up, its mouth open, fangs bared, darting toward Lei Tao. Just as the snake was about to bite him, Lei Tao's right hand, like lightning, grasped its vitals. His fingers clasped tightly, feeling the slithering, struggling body. Almost simultaneously, his left hand swiftly grasped the snake's tail, his hands working in unison, his arm muscles tensing like steel. Using the force of his twisting body, he swung the snake through the air several times, its body tracing blurry arcs and sending a whistling sound through the air. Then, using the sheer force of his swing, he hurled the snake against a sharp rock on the side of the road. With a dull snap, the snake's body slammed against the rock, collapsing, twitching a few times before remaining motionless.
Lei Tao breathed a sigh of relief, but before he could celebrate, he felt the ground beneath him give way. He thought to himself, "Oh no!" Before he could react, his foot had sunk into a large pit. Just as he was about to fall, he quickly grabbed a nearby vine. Veins bulged in his arms as he struggled to steady himself. Then, he slowly crawled to the surface, breathing heavily with lingering fear. He retrieved his tactical flashlight from the Bagua gyroscope's space and, with a startling look, broke out in a cold sweat. He saw a seven- to eight-meter-deep pit, its bottom thick with dense wooden spikes and dozens of corpses. The bodies had long since decayed, emitting a foul stench. Some had even been reduced to mere bones. They must have been those who had accidentally stepped on the trap, or perhaps victims deliberately dumped there by the Japanese.
Lei Tao calmed down, knowing that he couldn't stay here for long. He suppressed his inner discomfort and turned around to continue looking for a safe evacuation route. He carefully walked around the edge of the pit, keeping his eyes alert and paying attention to the surrounding movements.
After walking for a while, he came to a relatively open area, but the trees were relatively sparse, making for poor concealment. As Lei Tao hesitated whether to cross the area, he suddenly heard a clamor of voices and footsteps in the distance, as if a large group was approaching. Startled, he frantically searched for shelter. Not far away, he spotted a large rock with a narrow crevice behind it, barely wide enough for one person. He quickly ran over, sideways into the crevice, and pressed himself against the rock, daring not to breathe.
Soon, a group of Japanese soldiers appeared in his sight. They appeared well-equipped and moved in an orderly manner, clearly a well-trained force. They were searching the area, seemingly searching for something. Lei Tao silently prayed that they wouldn't discover him. At the same time, he gripped his weapon tightly, ready to fight at any moment.
Fortunately, the Japanese soldiers did not find Lei Tao's hiding place. After searching nearby, they left in another direction. Lei Tao breathed a sigh of relief, but he knew that the danger still existed and he had to find a safe evacuation route as soon as possible to meet up with the members of the Military Control Special Operations Team.
Lei Tao continued to navigate the woods, relying on his wit and courage to avoid danger time and again. Finally, he found a winding but relatively safe path. He quickly returned along the path, ready to break the news to the members of the Military Control Commission's special operations team. On his way back, he heard a dull explosion behind him, followed by intense gunfire. His heart tightened, fearing that the Military Control Commission's special operations team had met with an accident. He quickened his pace and ran towards the explosion.
