Chapter 132 Unexpected Event (1)
Chapter 132 Unexpected Event (1)
"Captain Nie, how are you feeling now?" Nie Jiyang walked to the door and saw two fully armed researchers outside through the small window. One of them was carrying several boxes containing crystals, while the other was asking about Nie Jiyang's condition and making a record.
“I don’t feel anything special. This crystal didn’t have any particular effect on me.” After saying that, Nie Jiyang slipped the small box in his hand through a small crack in the window. Another researcher took it and then gave him another box.
Just as the two were handing over the gun, another gunshot rang out not far away. Nie Jiyang could tell from the direction and loudness of the gunshot that it was coming from two or three rooms to his left.
"I'm sorry." The researcher who was taking notes closed the register in his hand, turned to the right with his colleague, and gave a proper military salute.
"Did they all fail on their first attempt?" Nie Jiyang asked again as the two researchers outside the door turned to leave.
“No, Captain Wang has already tried the fourth one.” When the researcher who was holding the box turned around to say this, he clearly glanced behind Nie Jiyang. Nie Jiyang also turned around and glanced back. There was a camera installed in the corner of the room.
In fact, given Nie Jiyang's usual alertness, he should have noticed it as soon as he entered the room, but he was in a state of confusion and bewilderment, so he hadn't carefully observed his surroundings. It seemed he was the last person to start trying, which was completely different from his usual self. Nie Jiyang turned back and smiled at the researcher outside the door, then took the new box and returned to the bedside in the corner.
This time, Nie Jiyang didn't hesitate. As soon as he sat down, he opened the small wooden box in his hand. The crystal inside was about the same size as the one from before. The slight difference in size shouldn't affect the crystal's grade. This time, he got a light blue one.
After playing with the blue crystal for two minutes, there was another knock on the door. It seemed he had failed again, but fortunately, he didn't hear any more gunshots in the next few minutes.
"Captain Nie, how are you feeling?" It was the researcher's voice again outside the door. Nie Jiyang walked over but found that he was the only one there this time.
"I don't have any particular feeling," Nie Jiyang answered his question first, then casually asked, "What about your colleagues?"
"I don't know why several colleagues suddenly said they felt cold at the same time. They went with the team leader to check the base's central control system." The researcher said as he handed Nie Jiyang the third box he was going to try. As soon as the two of them finished exchanging boxes, they felt the ground beneath their feet tremble slightly.
As everyone at the South China base knows, all four major bases built by the state have been equipped with protective shields. In case of special circumstances, the command center will activate the protective shields to cover the entire base and prevent it from being affected by the outside world. Nie Jiyang didn't know if it was raining viruses again like before, but judging from the outside temperature, even if it rained, it would freeze into ice crystals before falling.
The researcher's communication device on his wrist lit up, and he immediately looked down to check it. "It seems to have gotten colder outside, so the base has activated its protection mechanisms."
Hearing the researcher's explanation, Nie Jiyang felt relieved and took the new small box back to his bedside. This time, he found a green crystal inside…
When Nie Jiyang was experimenting with the sixth crystal, the researchers finally brought good news: one experiment had finally succeeded. The one who successfully absorbed the crystal was a researcher from the institute. Only four researchers had passed the screening, and this was the only one who was willing to participate in the experiment.
This was the fourth crystal he had tried. When the researcher mentioned this, Nie Jiyang chuckled to himself. The researcher's courage was only slightly less than his own. It seemed that he still needed to work harder.
However, since Team Leader Liu had taken several researchers to the base's control room and hadn't returned yet, the researcher who had successfully absorbed the crystal was still in his observation room. Nie Jiyang and his team, on the other hand, had to continue their experiments.
"What color crystal did he absorb?" Nie Jiyang asked as he took his sixth crystal.
"Fire-type. I heard from Team Leader Liu that Team Leader Qin's fire-type ability is very powerful. It seems we will have a strong combat force." The researcher's eyes were full of hope. After saying goodbye to Nie Jiyang, he went to another observation room.
Just as Nie Jiyang was about to open the wooden box in his hand, a commotion suddenly broke out in the corridor outside the observation room. He heard the sound of knocking on the iron door and thought that another failed individual had probably appeared. He was thinking that there might be gunshots soon, but he also faintly smelled something burning.
Nie Jiyang seemed to have a vague idea of what was going on. Someone had just successfully absorbed a fire-type crystal, and now there was a burnt smell. Could it be that something had happened to the researcher who absorbed the crystal?
Nie Jiyang put down the small wooden box in his hand, rushed to the door and pressed the button to the small window, wanting to see what was happening outside through the narrow window. The researcher who had just spoken to him ran back and passed by his door, seemingly on his way to help.
Soon, the footsteps outside grew louder and louder. The previous experiments had all failed to absorb the crystal, and the current situation gave Nie Jiyang a bad feeling. He could only keep his eyes glued to the small window, observing the outside, but his room was too far inside; he could only hear the footsteps and noises, along with some faint, suppressed groans.
After about two or three minutes, the noise outside gradually subsided, followed by the sound of several bolts being pulled. Nie Jiyang recognized this sound; it was the sound of a bullet being chambered. The muffled groan that had been suppressed suddenly became very clear at this moment, and Nie Jiyang could feel the excruciating pain from the sound.
Nie Jiyang guessed that the reason for not firing the gun for so long was probably because they were waiting for Team Leader Liu to return, since he was the first person among this batch of test subjects to successfully absorb the crystal.
However, the people in the room didn't seem to want to give them that chance. His muffled groan quickly disappeared, replaced by a heart-wrenching roar, followed by the sound of violently slamming against the iron door.
Nie Jiyang thought for a moment, then went back to his bedside, picked up the small box on the table, and was about to call for the people in the monitoring room to open the door when he saw Pei Simin and several researchers walk past his room. Then the door to his observation room opened.
