Chapter 51 A Tense Night
Chapter 51 A Tense Night
Lu Yuan and his group of seven returned to the hotel lobby before 6 p.m. To ensure that the armored vehicle would not be destroyed by the zombies with their bare hands, Lu Yuan put it back into his spatial storage after getting out of the vehicle.
They quickly entered the elevator and went straight to the sixth floor. They had angered the zombie in the suit that afternoon and didn't know what kind of retaliation he would take, so they didn't dare to stay outside any longer. They only dared to relax after entering Gu Nanfeng's suite.
Gu Nanfeng's suite in the hotel in the park is an SVIP suite. The door and windows are at the highest level of security, and the elevator is point-to-point, so the security level is not low. However, they still have to be on the safe side.
For dinner, they didn't have a big hot pot meal like the previous two days. Lu Yuan just took two hot dishes from his space, and everyone ate some instant rice or instant hot pot with them.
After quickly finishing dinner, Lu Yuan and his fellow students, under the direction of Qin Yuan and Lin Yun, went to wash up and get ready. The seven of them arranged a duty roster, as they now had to keep a close eye on the activities of the zombies in the park.
Lu Yuan was assigned to the first shift alone, which was from 8:00 to 11:00. The main reason he was on duty alone was because everyone was still awake at that time. However, Lu Yuan had to obediently move a small stool and hide behind the curtains of the French windows, occasionally using night vision binoculars to observe the outside movements.
From 11 p.m. to 8 a.m. the next day, the remaining six people, including Gu Nanfeng, were divided into three teams and took turns every three hours.
To be honest, this was the first time Lu Yuan and his team had spent such a tense night since the zombie virus outbreak.
Before Zhong Qiang and the zombie in the suit were face to face, they had never been particularly afraid of the zombies they had encountered before. But today they were truly afraid. Lu Yuan even felt that he could see a strong killing intent in the empty whites of the zombie's eyes.
Lu Yuan moved a chair to sit by the French windows, slightly lifted the curtains, and observed with night vision binoculars. Unlike the previous few days, tonight he quickly spotted several zombies in motion. Judging from their speed, they were not second-generation zombies, but after the second baptism of the virus rain, their speed was still much faster than at the beginning.
Lu Yuan tried to count the zombies appearing in the camera, but he got confused and couldn't count them at all. It seemed that there were many more zombies in the park than they had imagined. He turned around and told the other six people who were organizing their equipment in the living room.
"I thought there were only a hundred or so zombies here." Zhong Qiang didn't dare to recall his experience of being face-to-face with zombies today. He kept forcing himself to recall the time more than a month ago when he was still wreaking havoc near Gu Nanfeng's villa.
“You’re really strong,” Yang Xiao patted Zhong Qiang on the shoulder to comfort him. “Even if I had my face pressed against that second-generation zombie today, I would have wet my pants.”
"But how come there are so many zombies here?" Pei Sihao asked, puzzled. "Didn't Brother Gu say that this place is currently closed for maintenance and that all the employees are on holiday?"
"It might be because of the zoo." Gu Nanfeng pondered repeatedly. This resort is more than an hour's drive from the densely populated city center, and it was closed for maintenance during the holiday. The only explanation for so many zombies hiding here is the disappearance of animals that they have been unable to explain.
"Can we contact Beijing now to inquire about the situation?" Lin Yun had also considered the issue of the animals. If they were at the base, they could report to command and have the command allocate drones to investigate. But now they only had seven people. He guessed that Lu Yuan had drones, but he didn't know if he had many, as he hadn't seen Lu Yuan and his team use them in the past few days.
"Or maybe we could get a drone and fly it around tomorrow?" Qin Yuan had similar thoughts to Lin Yun, but he didn't think as much as Lin Yun did. Besides, Gu Nanfeng had given him a drone at the pre-made vegetable factory, so he directly asked about drones, "Do you have any more drones?"
"Oh right, I forgot about the drone!" Lu Yuan, standing by the floor-to-ceiling window, slapped his thigh and pulled a drone out of his storage space.
"I'll do some tweaking, and I'll fly it around tomorrow morning to see what happens." Gu Nanfeng walked over, took the drone, and sat down at the dining table next to him to start tweaking it.
"I can't get through to my brother's satellite phone." Lin Yun had just asked if he could contact Beijing, so Pei Sihao started calling his older brother, but he couldn't get through. His father and second brother also couldn't get through. He thought that his older brother had said he was going to find out about the animals, so the whole family was probably busy. He didn't even call his mother, since she wouldn't be able to explain anything anyway.
“I reckon Brother Min is already investigating the animal issue,” Gu Nanfeng said while adjusting the drone. “Don’t worry, as long as Beijing takes it seriously, all the provinces and cities will receive the news and pay attention to this matter.”
After Gu Nanfeng said that, Qin Yuan and Lin Yun felt a little relieved. When they were getting ready to wash up, they tried to contact the command center of the security base, but their walkie-talkies couldn't connect no matter how they tried. It seemed that the base had simply assumed that they had died in the line of duty.
Even if they returned to the safe base overnight and reported these things, the command headquarters probably wouldn't take it seriously. However, if the notification came from Beijing, the base might take it seriously.
Because of the frequent zombie activity outside the hotel, Lu Yuan's arms were getting tired from holding up the binoculars to observe. So he simply found a tripod telescope in his space and set it up. Pei Sihao knew a lot about these and offered to help him adjust it. If it weren't for the current special circumstances, he would have liked to look at the Big Dipper.
The telescope was quickly set up, and its field of view was farther and clearer than the handheld telescope he had used before. Lu Yuan could clearly see more zombies moving around stealthily, and he also noticed that there were many more zombies around the hotel, as if they had gathered from other places.
"Something might happen tonight." Lu Yuan turned to look at the others.
"Don't worry, unless they have a bomb, they won't be able to get into this room." Gu Nanfeng was quite calm. He placed the drone he had just finished testing on the dining table and came over to use a telescope to check the surroundings.
"It seems the zombies that were hiding have all come out." Pei Sihao also came over for a look. The zombies outside were moving around rustlingly, as if they were making some kind of deployment around the hotel.
"If we don't go out, won't they cry?" In this critical moment, only Yang Xiao could still tell a joke, after all, he prided himself on being very experienced.
“You’re right. We’ve taken all the supplies we needed. As long as we stay here, we’re safe.” Qin Yuan slapped Yang Xiao on the back. Although Yang Xiao usually acted tough, he was still just a skinny college student and couldn’t withstand Qin Yuan’s slap.
"Cough cough!" Yang Xiao patted his chest and coughed twice, complaining, "I only have five years of experience in my dream, I haven't even developed abs yet."
Soon it was 11 o'clock. Yang Xiao and Zhong Qiang took over Lu Yuan's shift. Gu Nanfeng told Lu Yuan to go back to his room to rest, but Lu Yuan saw that everyone else was just curled up on the sofa in the living room with their eyes closed, so he found a single sofa and curled up there. He always felt that he would feel safer in a crowded place.
