Chapter 279 Winter Hunting
Chapter 279 Winter Hunting
The cold winds of December howled and blew all the way into January.
It blew away the sisters' hard work and sweat of the past year, and ushered in their new year of "ox-and-horse" life.
After all, even during these past few months when they should have been hibernating, they haven't had much of a break, so the coming year will probably be even busier.
Sure enough, early this morning, Lin Lanshan pestered her sister to take her hunting in the deep mountains. She'd been nagging about this for ages, finally doing so after the snow melted and after she'd lost interest in going.
I successfully persuaded my sister to go to the deep mountains with me.
This time, they didn't bring peaches and reunion and peace with them, letting them wander freely in the valley.
While everyone else is busy working, these animals have been cozying up inside, eating and drinking well, for almost a month! If we don't let them go out and find their own food soon, they'll probably forget they're capable of being self-reliant!
After watching Taozi and Tuanyuan Ankang leave their sight, the two of them shouldered their long-unused bows and arrows, dragged their dusty carts, and headed into the deep mountains.
Well, as for why they dragged the cart along, it's because Lin Lanshan felt it might come in handy.
According to her, "It's been so long since we've hunted, so size aside, we should be able to bring back at least a few. Even if we don't get any meat, we should be able to fill a cart with firewood."
We can't go out and come back empty-handed!
Although the snow had melted, no outsiders had approached the inner part of the mountains, and there were no footprints. So as soon as you left the valley, you could see that a thin layer of snow still covered the branches and the ground, all clean and white.
The scene before them was a mix of white patches of snow that hadn't completely melted and brownish-black patches of mud that had thawed, the two colors alternating like a spotted dog.
It's not exactly beautiful, but it's not ugly either.
Lin Lanshan walked ahead, a bow and arrows slung over one shoulder, her hand gripping the rope of the cart. In her other hand, she held a candied hawthorn and was munching on it.
The red candied hawthorn skewers stood out brightly against the monotonous colors of the deep mountains.
"Sister, look here!" She suddenly squatted down, pointing with a red candied hawthorn to a small cluster of tender green under the snow.
"Look, it's so cold, and winter isn't over yet, but these little green grasses have already sprouted so eagerly!"
"I didn't even notice it unless I looked closely, but quite a lot of new grass has grown here!"
The pale green grass lay hidden beneath the snow, neither pushing upwards nor withering. Quietly gathering its strength, it waited for the snow to melt before bursting forth, growing wildly...
This is probably what it means when the snow clears and the sky turns blue, and all things are reborn.
However, the two sisters, Lin Chunyi and Lin Lanshan, didn't think of so many poetic and artistic things.
Lin Lanshan clapped her hands excitedly and said, "Right? This is fantastic news! I was worried that if I kicked Taozi and Tuanyuan Ankang out, they would go hungry."
I didn't expect so many little grasses to have sprouted on the ground. Now I don't have to worry about them. Look how tender these little grasses are, I almost think they're too good for me!
Lin Chunyi nodded and smiled, then continued walking forward, "Hmm, it seems we can officially stop supplying them with food!"
I've never fed these guys for such a long time before, I really didn't know they could eat so much!
Those guys, their mouths are like sweeping machines.
As soon as you put a bowl of grain in it, if you lower your head, a hole will appear in the bowl!
We can't afford to raise them, we simply can't afford it!
Peach and Reunion are back to eating, drinking, and having fun every day. I wonder if they're happy. But the newly sprouted grass seems to be thinking: "Heh, all that hard work for months, and it's all gone in one bite..."
In the deep mountains, it didn't make much difference to the two sisters which direction they went—north, south, east, or west. It was simply a matter of how many trees there were, and how many wild animals there were.
So the two of them discussed it and decided to close their eyes, randomly choose a direction, and walk forward, focusing on randomness and following fate.
At this moment, Lin Chunyi, who was walking behind, suddenly stopped and pointed to the woods on her right, saying, "Lanshan, I've discovered that there are advantages to the snow not completely melting. Look over there, what's that!"
"Huh? Why... Wow, we're really lucky! Let me see which lucky beast we're going to meet today, hehehe~"
Lin Lanshan slung the bow and arrows over her shoulder, dropped the cart, and followed a series of messy footprints.
In places where there is only a thin layer of snow on the ground, even the slightest footprint can be clearly seen!
"Don't run! Watch your step on the snow, or you'll fall into a hole!" Lin Chunyi finished speaking, and the person in front of her had already disappeared.
Helpless, she could only drag the cart and chase after them alone. The cart screeched and groaned as it sped across the muddy, snow-covered ground...
"call out!"
It was the sound of an arrow being shot out, followed by a startled squeal coming from a throat.
Immediately afterwards, two afterimages appeared above Lin Chunyi's head and flew past.
Lin Lanshan came running back, pointing to the sky and shouting, "Sister, don't just stand there! Quick, catch them! They've all gotten away!!!"
Lin Chunyi looked at the two black dots that had already flown hundreds of meters away, "..."
At this altitude and at this distance, they were two pheasants frantically fleeing for their lives in flight!
How could her bow and arrow possibly have successfully targeted and hit the target?
In the end, all we'll get is the chicken, and then we'll have to spend time looking for the arrow that's probably flown off to some random tree.
Unless she grows a pair of big wings, there's no way she can catch this pheasant.
So I've decided not to pursue it!
Seeing that all hope was lost, Lin Lanshan could only stomp her foot and say angrily, "Oh dear, what bad luck! It must be the wrong time of day; it's not a good day to go out!"
Lin Chunyi squinted and suddenly asked, "Is this just a matter of luck?"
Lin Lanshan nodded firmly and replied, "Yes! Otherwise, how could they have escaped!"
"I couldn't catch them because they were in the sky, too high and too far. Why did your arrow miss? Was it because you were kind-hearted, knowing they walk slowly on the ground, and wanted them to fly in the sky for a while?"
Don't think she didn't know. The arrows had already been fired, and the two pheasants on the ground were completely unharmed. Could this be just a matter of luck?
"Ah, this~" Lin Lanshan's face stiffened, and her originally confident demeanor turned into one of guilt.
How can I say this without being too blunt, that I hadn't used a bow and arrow for a while, and that the direction was slightly off due to an accident...?
Lin Chunyi rolled her eyes at her, spread her hands, and started nagging: "Look at you, I told you to practice archery when you have free time, so you don't lose your touch, but you didn't listen. Two perfectly good pheasants, and you just missed, oh dear, they're both gone!"
You're practically someone who can roam freely in these deep mountains. You can even hunt a pheasant by leaping away. You're not afraid of being laughed at if people say you're a hunter!"
Lin Lanshan's expression,
No hehe.
Later, when she chatted with other hunters about her skills, she would mention that she had managed to release pheasants after more than ten years of hunting.
After years of hard work, I'm still a newcomer upon my return...
