Chapter 353: I Can’t Read
Chapter 353: I Can’t Read
Susan Caldwell’s smile froze on her face. Seeing Vera Xavier’s silence, she’d assumed Vera couldn’t afford the half-million, and planned to lay into her with scornful remarks after stating the wager, grinding her into the dust.
But she never imagined Vera Xavier would counter like that! ’How unbelievably arrogant does Vera have to be to say such a thing!’
Vera Xavier’s lips curved into a smirk. She looked at Susan Caldwell and said, "What? Scared? If you’re scared, then take your little lackey and get lost. Don’t be an eyesore."
’Besides, she and Susan Caldwell were fated to be mortal enemies in both this life and the last, so there was no reason to be polite.’
’And with a personality like Susan Caldwell’s, the more courteous you were, the more she saw you as a pushover. In that respect, she was exactly like Rona Langdon—it was ingrained in their nature.’
Jack Judd immediately started applauding. "That’s our sister-in-law for you! Badass, powerful, and utterly invincible!"
Susan Caldwell’s face twisted slightly. She had an incredibly high opinion of herself and always had everyone and everything around her firmly under her thumb. But Vera Xavier’s words and actions were completely unlike an ordinary person’s; she had slipped from Susan’s grasp, leaving her baffled.
A cold sneer spread across her lips. "Your wager is... interesting. I’ll take that bet!"
Vera Xavier raised an eyebrow and smiled. "Excellent!"
Afraid Vera Xavier might try to back out, Susan Caldwell took a pen and paper from her bag. She wrote down the terms of the wager in duplicate, signed her copy, and then told Vera to sign.
Vera Xavier glanced over the contract’s contents. It was exactly as they had just discussed. After confirming there was no tricky phrasing or wordplay, she calmly asked the nearby shop owner for an ink pad and pressed her thumbprint onto the paper.
Susan Caldwell, who had been hoping to learn her name, watched her with confusion. Vera said flatly, "I’m from the countryside. I can’t read."
Jack Judd and Aaron Cheney exchanged a look. ’She was the top-ranked student at No. 1 High during the college entrance exams,’ they thought. ’How could she possibly be illiterate?’
But they were on her side. Even though they didn’t know why she was doing it, they would never expose her.
’The way she read that contract just now... she didn’t look illiterate at all! This is obviously just her disdainful way of refusing to tell me her name!’
Skylar Crowe glared at Vera. "You can’t even read, and you’re still making bets with us! Just get ready to eat rocks!"
Vera replied with a smile, "From the sound of it, if Susan Caldwell loses, you’ll be eating those stones for her? In that case, you’d better remind her not to buy any that are too big. I’d worry you might burst."
Skylar Crowe was so furious she looked ready to charge forward and hit Vera. Vera simply lifted a hand, beckoning her to bring it on.
Susan Caldwell held Skylar back. "There’s no need to get into a verbal spat. The outcome will be clear this afternoon."
Skylar Crowe stomped her foot in frustration. Vera couldn’t be bothered with them any longer and left with Jack Judd and Aaron Cheney.
After they left, Skylar Crowe hurriedly asked, "Susan, how confident are you that you’ll win?"
Susan Caldwell looked at her. "I get the feeling there’s more to that woman than meets the eye. You’ve caused me a fair bit of trouble this time."
Skylar Crowe laughed. "No matter how capable she is, she can’t compare to you, Susan! Everyone in Veridia knows you’re our foremost talent. A nobody like her who can’t even read? She’s not even in your league!"
Irene Jensen, who had been silent the whole time, spoke up. "Of course you’d be the one to believe she’s illiterate. She only said that because she didn’t want to tell us her name. This woman... she’s truly interesting. It makes me feel like her background is a complete mystery."
